Frequently Asked Questions
What does a tutoring session look like?
Ideally, students will have already communicated with me where they need help and specifically any areas of concern. They should have everything they need as we begin our sessions – homework, notes, paper, pencil, and a calculator. Learning is best done by doing. When students have already attempted their homework assignments and are ready to discuss the concepts that are giving them difficulty, we are able to make the most progress. It is helpful to have the student actually talk through their problems so I can discern any misunderstandings and see where I can best help. Often it is just explaining a concept in a new or different way. During our time together, we will look at several examples of problems in an effort to practice and achieve understanding. If time allows, we can talk about future concepts that will be presented in their math class in the coming weeks. My goal is to help students gain the confidence they need to be successful.
How does online tutoring work?
I use Zoom as a platform to host each session. I will send students a link which they can use to join the meeting. Zoom gives us the ability to have a video and audio connection. I encourage students to explain aloud as they write their problems on a piece of paper in front of them. As students talk through the concepts, it reinforces the vocabulary that they need to practice. Using an additional device, I will be able to share my screen so that I can visually demonstrate how to work through any problem areas.
Do I need to download any software?Y
You need to have Zoom downloaded on your device.
What tech do I need for a session?
A computer, laptop, or tablet with a microphone and camera (most laptops and tablets come with these built-in now). The camera is not needed, but helps tremendously for nonverbal cues when students aren’t understanding something.
How do I pay for the session?
Payments are accepted using:
- Zelle – an easy to use method connected with most banks
- Venmo – an easy to use method connected with most banks
- Apple Pay – available for free on apple devices
